Fellowships from the Toulouse Graduate School
Pursuing a graduate degree is an important decision, and we want you to know that cost does not have to be a barrier to your success. Your plans to pay for graduate school may include fellowships, assistantships, scholarships, grant funds, student loans or student employment. The resources below are here to help you explore your options.
Cost of Attendance
- One of America's 100 Best College Buys® for 24 consecutive years, UNT offers the quality of a private university at an affordable cost. The 2019-2020 annual tuition cost estimate for 9 graduate semester credit hours each semester is $2,054.51 for Texas residents and $3,953.51 for nonresidents (plus additional instructional fees).
Financial Aid and Loans
- Financial Aid makes it possible for thousands of students to attend UNT. Learn the
basics of financial aid, including eligibility, financial need determination, and how to apply using the
FAFSA.
Effective Fall 2012, graduate and professional students are no longer eligible to receive subsidized loans. For more information, you can review the Department of Education's electronic Announcement.
Fellowships and Scholarships
- The Toulouse Graduate School offers a limited amount of fellowships and scholarships. These range from $500 a semester to $33,000 a year, including health benefits.
- Academic Achievement Scholarship (AAS) - For Newly Admitted PhD Students
- The Thesis and Dissertation Fellowship (TDF) - For PhD Students who are ABD
Teaching Assistantships
- Assistantships are available on a limited basis in most graduate programs. These positions provide funds for many masters and doctoral students. Each department or program has its own requirements and expectations for their assistants and fellows.
Student Employment
- As a student at UNT, you are eligible to apply to on-campus, hourly student positions through the Career Center. Many of these positions are College Work Study eligible.
International Students
- International students are not eligible to receive federal financial aid (applied for through the FAFSA). However, you may apply for UNT-International Admissions scholarships and grants, as well as teaching and research assistantships, and any of the scholarships or fellowships offered through the Toulouse Graduate School.
Veterans Services
- As a military service member or veteran, you can use your GI Bill or Hazlewood benefits to help pay for college expenses.
Departmental Teaching Assistantships, Teaching Fellowships, and Research Assistantships
Teaching Assistant and Teaching Fellow positions are available for a number of our graduate students. Presently, the departmental stipends began at $13,356.00 per year. There is often summer teaching available to increase the stipend. TA/TF positions include a waiver of out-of-state tuition (i.e., the student pays at the in-state rate instead). UNT has a tuition benefit program in place to help defray the cost of tuition.

Students applying to be Teaching Assistants or Teaching Fellows should indicate their intentions on the letters of purpose that they submit with the other application materials due by February 1 each year. More details of the application requirements can be found at our Graduate Admissions page.

Merit Scholarships
- For department scholarships see "Scholarships" tab above.
- There are also a limited number of Toulouse Fellowships awarded by the Graduate School of UNT.
- A limited number of graduate awards of $1,000 may be offered by the Graduate School each year. These supports include a waiver of out-of-state tuition (i.e., the student pays at the lower in-state rate instead) for recipients who are international students or students from other states within the United States. They can be awarded to first or second year students with support awarded in the first possibility renewed for a second year.
